Q: What does Empowering Women mean to you?
Dr Tayo: Enabling women to make their own decisions powerfully, and not have to comply with the old rules that have been set up by someone else. Those entry requirements were meant to exclude them and do not honour them.
It's not about just getting a seat at the table, it's about being a decision maker. Determining HOW the table will be constructed.
Q: How did you get started working in your field?
Dr Tayo: My personal and professional experience.
In medical school, menopause was practically a passing comment about it occurring due to a decline in hormones. Nothing more - not the effects or how it really affected women, or even how to figure it out, not to talk of managing it.
That lack of knowledge was glaringly obvious when I went through perimenopause, which became an almost decade long struggle to get to a place where I felt like myself again.
In hindsight, the long struggle was totally unnecessary, which is why I'm a passionate menopause awareness advocate.
Q: What do you love most about your job? / What are you most proud of?
Dr Tayo: It supports and empowers women. There's nothing more rewarding than seeing a woman come into her own.
Perimenopause and menopause is no longer considered the end of her useful life. Instead, she is confident about her future and there isn't a limit to what she can do.
Q: What advice would you give to someone considering this line of work?
Dr Tayo: Developing certain virtues/characteristics (which are skills that can be developed)
* Passion
* Willingness to learn and grow continuously to attain mastery
* Discipline
* Resourcefulness & creativity
* Resilience
Q: Anything else you would like to add?
Dr Tayo: I'm passionate about supporting women in midlife to be able to attain their goals, instead of feeling that they're being hampered by perimenopause and menopause.
I want to change the way we've been told to operate as women in society, especially when it’s detrimental to our wellbeing. We shouldn’t need permission to be ourselves. We already have excellence inside us.
It's important to encourage conversations around the menopause journey so women are not caught unawares as most are now. With raised awareness, they can begin to put preventive measures in place in their 30's, which will allow them to cruise through midlife without the usual upheavals that those before them had to go through.
It is vital to develop communities of women where we share, talk & support each other.
I welcome the opportunity to support women, and opportunities to continue to spread awareness widely to the millions of women who would prefer a low stress, proven & hormone-free approach to hormone balancing.
