Meet Nushrat Ahmed, A Podcaster Empowering Women in the Trades

Q: What does Empowering Women mean to you?

Nushrat: Empowering women has been my life's mission since day 1. In 2024 I started a podcast: Next Gen MFG for the voices of young people to be heard, similar to how my story is heard. And it's been such an honor to be on countless podcasts that I want other people to feel that and to feel seen. Because of that, I got to start the Sisterhood of Trades with three other tradeswomen - I now serve over 1100 tradeswomen in a group chat as their CEO. And I hope to continue to bring them opportunities and microphones. "Why microphones?", you may ask... well...I've been saying this a lot lately but whenever I (or any one of my board members) is speaking to someone in a position of power, or getting heard on Linkedin - it's not just one singular voice. It's the experiences, the lives, and the passions of 1100 other women and girls. We represent something bigger than us now, and I am so proud of it. I hope to continue to create a safe space for women in the trades, and a nurturing environment for curious women so they can learn at their own pace.

Q: How did you get started working in your field?

Nushrat: I started working as a CNC operator completely by chance, I was enrolled in automotive classes at NASCAR Tech - thanks to some inspiring high school auto tech teachers. I had always wanted to make car parts but never wanted to go to engineering school - and I still had no idea about machining until 2022. I was looking for a well paying job and machining fell into my hands - so I started working in automotive plants - eventually landed in a motorsports manufacturing facility where I started my Linkedin journey. Fast forward a few different roles (like quality for aerospace), I am now at ProShop ERP as customer engagement and marketing coordinator. Currently juggling both my role at ProShop and the growth of the Sisterhood.

Q: What do you love most about your job? / What are you most proud of?

Nushrat: I love making chips - I love anything to do with manufacturing really. Which is why at night I'm in a garage shop either cutting chips or laying beads. I love the idea of taking a raw stock of metal, absolutely bare bones and turning it into something meaningful. Now, almost every hobby I can think of - has to do with manufacturing. I'm always like "Oh, I can see how they machined that"

Q: What advice would you give to someone considering this line of work?

Nushrat: Don't back down, find your mentors - yes you'll have more than one, don't hesitate to leave if your workplace isn't seeing your value or if they aren't challenging you enough, DO NOT BE AFRAID TO SPEAK UP - ADVOCATE for the things you want AND for the things that are right. TALK about your work - get on LinkedIn and connect!

Q: Anything else you would like to add?

Nushrat: Thank YOU guys for what you do to empower both the women in this industry and the next generation as a whole
