The Safety Rack, a nonprofit organization dedicated to closing the personal protective equipment (PPE) equity gap for women in industry, has released a new educational resource titled “Navigating the PPE Equity Conversation.” The guide is now available for download at www.thesafetyrack.org.
Across many industries, including construction, utilities, manufacturing, and emergency services, workers continue to face challenges accessing properly fitting PPE. Ill-fitting equipment can compromise protection, reduce mobility, and increase risk of injury. While awareness of these issues is growing, many workers are unsure how to raise concerns with employers or understand the standards that support their requests for appropriate equipment.
The new guide was developed to help address that gap.
“For years we’ve heard the same question from women across multiple industries: ‘How do I have this conversation with my employer?’” said Amy Roosa, Founder of The Safety Rack. “This guide was created to give workers the tools, knowledge, and confidence to advocate for properly fitting PPE while also helping employers better understand the safety and compliance considerations involved.”
The guide provides practical guidance for workers preparing to discuss PPE concerns with supervisors or safety leaders, including:
Key considerations when evaluating PPE fit and function
An overview of relevant safety requirements and standards
Steps to prepare for productive conversations with employers
Guidance on documenting concerns and communicating solutions
Resources to support safer and more equitable PPE practices
Developed with input from safety professionals and industry experts, Navigating the PPE Equity Conversation aims to support constructive dialogue between workers and employers while reinforcing the importance of properly fitting protective equipment.
The guide is part of The Safety Rack’s broader mission to improve awareness, education, and research around PPE equity and worker protection across all industries.
“Properly fitting PPE is not a preference—it is a fundamental part of protecting workers,” Roosa added. “Our goal is to help move the conversation forward so that fit becomes a standard, not a privilege.”
The guide is available for download now at: www.thesafetyrack.org
